Hang in there soldier, you will survive!

This post is dedicated to my brother-in-law who survived a near fatal accident.

***************************************

Any accident, big or small, leaves and impact on the mind of the victim. Depending on the strength of the victim's mind, it leaves behind a permanent mark or phobia. To cut the long story short, their life will never be the same again.

If a person has witnessed or suffered an accident before and has suffered an irreparable loss, the odds of him/her being emotionally traumatized become greater than ever. It is very tempting for some people to write-off these individuals as weak-minded. However, every individual is born and brought up in different circumstances. Each person's reaction to stress is different. Some internalize it by becoming withdrawn, yet others externalize it by becoming irritable. Therefore, it is best not to pass judgements on people without knowing their past.

But it is these pitfalls that encourage us to explore the hero within us. Presence of mind becomes the key ingredient of success and leads us to take appropriate actions. If a phoenix can rise from the ashes, so can we. Ordinary people too can do extraordinary things by being an everyday hero for our family, friends and of course ourselves. Why get up, shake off the dust and move on after being knocked out? Because this beautiful life is worth it! These small instances of indomitable spirit when stretched over a lifetime are called as survivability!

A very appropriate song comes to mind - Mariah Carey's "Hero":

There's a hero
If you look inside your heart
You don't have to be afraid
Of what you are
There's an answer
If you reach into your soul
And the sorrow that you know
Will melt away

[Chorus:]
And then a hero comes along
With the strength to carry on
And you cast your fears aside
And you know you can survive
So when you feel like hope is gone
Look inside you and be strong
And you'll finally see the truth
That a hero lies in you

It's a long road
When you face the world alone
No one reaches out a hand
For you to hold
You can find love
If you search within yourself
And the emptiness you felt
Will disappear

[Chorus]

Lord knows
Dreams are hard to follow
But don't let anyone
Tear them away
Just hold on
There will be tomorrow
And in time
You'll find the way

[Chorus]
